Billy Idol: Rocker's former health battle ruled his life for about '10 years' – symptoms

In the 1980s, Idol’s life was riddled with cocaine and heroin, like so many rock stars of the time. In his memoir ‘Dancing With Myself’, he described how he would pass out in nightclubs and wake up in hospital because of his drug consumption. That all changed in 1990 as the star, on his motorbike, collided at a Hollywood intersection with a car. Although it hasn’t been perfect, Idol is managing his drug addiction.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, the creator of classic rock hits like “White Wedding” and “Rebel Yell”, detailed his exhausting battle with the substances.

Idol’s accident, which nearly resulted in him nearly having a leg amputated, acted as a harsh wake-up call that he needed to change.

He said: “It was a particularly horrible, painful time when I really didn’t know what was going to happen.

“I didn’t quite know if I could save my leg or, or whether it was going to be cut off.

“It was a bit of a watershed time for me. I had to change my life, had to think about things. I mean, I was kind of destroying myself, really.

“And I had young children as well at that time. I was thinking, ‘What am I saying to them by continuing to be a drug addict and nearly having an accident that seriously hurt me and possibly could have killed me?’ … I needed to get ahold of myself.”

Mayo Clinic states that there are many symptoms of drug addiction, some of which include:

  • Intense urges to use drugs which block out other thoughts

  • Feeling that you have to use drugs regularly, even several times a day

  • Spending money on a drug even though you can’t afford it

  • Doing irregular things to get the drug you desire, such as stealing

  • Failing in your attempts to stop the drug use

  • Continuing drug use even though you are aware it is damaging your health

  • Doing what you can to make yourself certain that you can supply yourself with drugs

  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms as you try to quit using the drug

Idol’s recovery process, like so many other recovering addicts, was not straight-forward, involving relapses.

DON’T MISS:

Although he admitted he’s not completely sober, he said he avoids hard drugs because of his experience in hospitals.

He said: “I’m not a 100 percent. I stopped the hard stuff, and I don’t drink much, things like that… I had to solve this problem about myself with the drug addiction, and that’s what was happening to me in a hospital bed.

“I was kind of realising I was going to face up to the thing that I hadn’t quite faced up that had been kind of ruling my life for about 10 years.

“And then yeah, over the next 10 years, I was able to gradually, I don’t know, develop some kind of discipline.”

According to Government statistics, between 2020 and 2021, 130,490 adults in the UK were treated professionally for substance misuse.

The process of recovery is rarely straightforward as addicts have to go through several physiological and psychological changes before being able to manage substances.

According to the NHS, a good starting place for people who might be struggling with addiction is to go to their GP, or a free helpline such as FRANK, who can offer free advice and refer you to specialists.

There are a variety of treatments available, including cognitive behavioural therapy or ‘talk therapy’.

There are also free support groups available such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous who offer structured self-help programmes to support recovering addicts.

That decision failed to pay off, however, with the Red Devils sacking Moyes after just 10 months in charge.

After the current West Ham boss came Van Gaal, who arrived with big things expected due to his past success at the likes of Barcelona and Ajax.

Giggs was hoping to get the Red Devils job himself, which was why he stayed, but both ended up leaving nearly six years ago.

When Jose Mourinho took over, he opted to maintain his close relationship with Rui Faria – who had previously worked under him at clubs such as Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Fair departed in the summer of 2018, though, with Michael Carrick then given a place on Mourinho’s bench.

Carrick stayed to work under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian also regularly picking up the thoughts of Phelan and Kieran McKenna throughout his spell in the dugout.
