FIA release statement into Lewis Hamilton inquiry after Wolff and Horner meeting

The FIA has released a statement regarding their investigation into the controversial conclusion of the 2021 season after calling Toto Wolff and Christian Horner to the governing body’s London HQ today. Today, the teams involved heard the FIA’s ‘detailed analysis’ of the controversy surrounding Max Verstappen’s world title win.

Last month, the FIA started the investigation into the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, in which Lewis Hamilton cruelly lost out on a record eighth Drivers’ Championship in the final lap.

F1 Race Director Michael Masi played a central role in the widely-disputed finale, seemingly altering his instructions to drivers under a safety car to accommodate one final lap of racing.

His decision helped Verstappen, on fresh tyres, overtake Hamilton, who had dominated the race, late on and produce the most dramatic end to the season possible.

Mercedes’ two protests immediately afterwards were dismissed, but the Silver Arrows agreed to drop their third appeal if the FIA held a full-scale investigation into the events at the Yas Marina Circuit and Masi’s position.

Wolff and Horner were among team bosses who arrived at Monday’s annual F1 Commission meeting in London.

And the Mercedes and Red Bull would’ve arrived expecting to discover the FIA’s findings, whilst drivers were involved in ‘open discussions’ before the meeting took place.

The FIA have now published a statement on their investigation, stating president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is set to present ‘structural changes’ and an ‘action plan’ in the near future.

It read: “The FIA President led detailed discussions of the 2021 FIA Formula 1 Abu Dhabi GP.

“Feedback from the Commission on matters raised will be incorporated into the president’s analysis and he will publicly present news of structural changes and action plan in the coming days.”

The FIA can’t finalise changes discussed in today’s F1 Commission until the World Motor Sport Council meeting on March 18.

It’s just two days before the 2022 season gets underway in Bahrain, where Hamilton and Verstappen will want to start their title challenge on a positive note.

And despite the current uncertainty around the outcome, ex-F1 driver John Watson has tipped Mohammed Ben Sulayem to make changes to win over Hamilton after his crushing end to last year.

He told RacingNews365: “I suppose that one of the things that has arisen is that the previous regime within the FIA – Todt and his acolytes – are effectively gone, and we’ve now got a new broom.

“I would like to hope that that new broom [is used] in the process of coming to terms with what occurred. To me – the whole thing – I can’t say it brought the sport into disrepute, but it didn’t do it a great deal of good.

“If they want to instigate changes, and if that means personnel changes, then you’ve got a new view and a new look from the new management at the FIA to do so.

“It might have been more difficult to do if the Todt regime had continued on for a further year or whatever because that would then be tantamount to them admitting that they, their officers, got it wrong.

“Because we’ve got a new team in the FIA, I think it’s much more straightforward for them to take a more objective look at the events that occurred and go through them almost by the minute, or even by the second, to ensure that what occurred in Abu Dhabi shouldn’t occur again.”

That decision failed to pay off, however, with the Red Devils sacking Moyes after just 10 months in charge.

After the current West Ham boss came Van Gaal, who arrived with big things expected due to his past success at the likes of Barcelona and Ajax.

Giggs was hoping to get the Red Devils job himself, which was why he stayed, but both ended up leaving nearly six years ago.

When Jose Mourinho took over, he opted to maintain his close relationship with Rui Faria – who had previously worked under him at clubs such as Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Fair departed in the summer of 2018, though, with Michael Carrick then given a place on Mourinho’s bench.

Carrick stayed to work under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian also regularly picking up the thoughts of Phelan and Kieran McKenna throughout his spell in the dugout.
