High cholesterol: Two signs that could result in 'losing' your foot through amputation

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced inside the liver and by eating food. While cholesterol supports your body in a number of important ways, consistently high levels can cause your arteries to narrow. This process – called peripheral arterial disease (PAD) – can prove life-threatening.

One of the most serious casualties of PAD is foot amputation and there are two telltale signs that indicate your foot has reached this perilous state.

Vascular charity Circular Foundation explains: “If an individual has rest pain or skin breakdown they are at risk of losing their foot or leg by amputation.”

As the charity explains, as the disease progresses, the amount of blood able to go down the leg is not enough to supply the nutrients and oxygen to their feet.

“In cases like this, the individual will get pain in their feet even when they’re not moving.”

The health body continues: “This is known as rest pain and is a symptom of critical limb ischaemia.

“Without nutrients and oxygen getting down into the foot, the skin is unable to function properly and can break down into an ulcer.”

Other symptoms of PAD include:

  • Hair loss on your legs and feet
  • Numbness or weakness in the legs
  • Brittle, slow-growing toenails
  • Ulcers (open sores) on your feet and legs, which do not heal
  • Changing skin colour on your legs, such as turning pale or blue
  • Shiny skin
  • In men, erectile dysfunction
  • The muscles in your legs shrinking (wasting).

How to respond to symptoms

The NHS says: “You should see a GP if you experience recurring leg pain when exercising.”

As the health body notes, many people mistakenly think this is just part of growing older, but there’s no reason why an otherwise healthy person should experience leg pain.

“PAD is usually diagnosed through a physical examination by a GP, and by comparing the blood pressure in your arm and your ankle.”

How to ward off high cholesterol

The key to staving off the threat of PAD and other cholesterol complications is to lead a healthy lifestyle.

There are two key pillars to cholesterol control – eating a healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise.

There are several foods which are not just part of a healthy diet, they can actively help to lower your cholesterol too.

According to cholesterol charity Heart UK, cutting down on saturated fat and replacing some of it with unsaturated fats is a great way to lower your cholesterol.

Foods containing unsaturated fats include:

  • Vegetable oils such as olive, sunflower, corn, rapeseed, nut and seed oils
  • Avocado, nuts and seeds
  • Fat spreads made from vegetable oils, such as sunflower and olive oil
  • Oily fish.

“Oily fish are a good source of healthy unsaturated fats, specifically a type called omega-3 fats,” explains Heart UK.

According to the charity, you should aim to eat two portions of fish per week, at least one of which should be oily.

A portion is 140g, but you could have two or three smaller portions throughout the week. Tinned, frozen or fresh all count e.g. salmon, sardines, pilchards, trout, herring and mackerel.”

It also says to avoid coconut and palm oil as, unlike other vegetable oils, they are high in saturated fat.

Saturated fat increases the amount of “bad” cholesterol in your blood.

That decision failed to pay off, however, with the Red Devils sacking Moyes after just 10 months in charge.

After the current West Ham boss came Van Gaal, who arrived with big things expected due to his past success at the likes of Barcelona and Ajax.

Giggs was hoping to get the Red Devils job himself, which was why he stayed, but both ended up leaving nearly six years ago.

When Jose Mourinho took over, he opted to maintain his close relationship with Rui Faria – who had previously worked under him at clubs such as Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Fair departed in the summer of 2018, though, with Michael Carrick then given a place on Mourinho’s bench.

Carrick stayed to work under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian also regularly picking up the thoughts of Phelan and Kieran McKenna throughout his spell in the dugout.
