Kamila Valieva ends final routine in tears as she misses out on medal after falling

Kamila Valieva, the 15-year-old Russian ice skater at the centre of the doping storm that has engulfed the Winter Olympics, fell on the ice during her final routine in the individual figure skating final, putting pay to her medal hopes.

The medal ceremony would not have gone ahead had Valieva placed inside the top three, with an investigation into her failed drugs test from December pending, but she tumbled three times on Thursday as the pressure on the teenager’s young shoulders told.

Valieva’s Russian teammate, Anna Shcherbakova, took gold.

Valieva has been at the centre of another Russian Olympic doping storm after it emerged last week that she had tested positive for the banned heart drug trimetazidine last year.

That revelation only emerged after she had helped the Russian Olympic Committee to victory in the team figure skating competition on February 7, with the medal ceremony for that event subsequently being put on hold.

Valieva made it to the half-way stage of the individual final in the gold-medal position after an excellent, emotional performance on Wednesday, but could not replicate that display the following day as she ended her routine in disbelieving tears.

Ultimately, she placed fourth in the final standings, meaning those athletes who did finish in a podium position will get to experience a medals ceremony.

Had Valieva won, that would have been scrapped, with the International Olympic Committee confirming the medals would be handed out down the line following the conclusion of Valieva’s case.

Valieva, although a prodigious talent on the ice, was a relative unknown on the global stage heading into the Games but she will leave a household name following several days of intense media attention and scrutiny over her failed test.

It is yet to be concluded how the banned substance made its way into Valieva’s system, though the youngster’s team this week claimed it was due to a mix-up with her grandfather’s heart medication.

That decision failed to pay off, however, with the Red Devils sacking Moyes after just 10 months in charge.

After the current West Ham boss came Van Gaal, who arrived with big things expected due to his past success at the likes of Barcelona and Ajax.

Giggs was hoping to get the Red Devils job himself, which was why he stayed, but both ended up leaving nearly six years ago.

When Jose Mourinho took over, he opted to maintain his close relationship with Rui Faria – who had previously worked under him at clubs such as Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Fair departed in the summer of 2018, though, with Michael Carrick then given a place on Mourinho’s bench.

Carrick stayed to work under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian also regularly picking up the thoughts of Phelan and Kieran McKenna throughout his spell in the dugout.
