Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen stare-off comment made by Daniel Ricciardo

F1 star Daniel Ricciardo has expanded on a tense stare-off between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen before last season’s nail-biting title decider. The Australian was perfectly positioned to watch the drama unfold first-hand on the final lap at Yas Marina, before a finish which he described as “pretty f***ed up”.

Hamilton and Verstappen fought tooth and nail for the world title in 2021, notably coming together at Silverstone and Monza.

There was also drama between the pair in Brazil, but the title chase reached a deafening crescendo in Abu Dhabi as the pair were brought face-to-face before lights out, and bumper-to-bumper on the final lap.

After FIA race director Michael Masi effectively left Hamilton ‘a sitting duck’, Verstappen used the fresh tyres on his Red Bull to pass the Brit and seal his maiden crown.

With that, a much-hyped race for the Drivers’ Championship came to a head in the most dramatic circumstances possible, and Ricciardo has expressed his feelings on an energy-sapping affair.

“The on track stuff, yeah I’m envious not to be part of that,” the McLaren star told talkSPORT.

“Of course, I want to battle wheel-to-wheel for wins and obviously if you come out on top that’s the most powerful feeling ever.

“But then I saw how much the rivalry was hyped up and the week of Abu Dhabi, you could not escape Max and Lewis, it was everywhere.

“Even on the grid before the race they had them standing next to each other, facing off, and I wasn’t envious of that.

“I was like yeah I’m glad I’m not part of this because that just looks draining and not that fun.”

The battle certainly proved to be a draining one, and Hamilton withdrew from social media for almost two months after the controversial ending had left him ‘disillusioned’ with the sport.

The seven-time world champion was not the only affected party though, and Red Bull chief Helmut Marko suggested that Verstappen could not enjoy a long career if every year came with such an intense battle.

Nevertheless, both drivers are set to return for the upcoming season after Mercedes dropped a long line of social media hints which seem to have put Hamilton retirement fears to bed.

The latest message came on Wednesday, a picture captioned ‘Year 16‘ as the Stevenage-born star gears up for his 16th F1 season.

Exactly how close Mercedes and Red Bull will be in terms of performance remains to be seen, with sweeping regulation changes in place for 2022.

Teams have already started to roll out their much-changed cars, and rapid response and development is expected to play a key role in which Constructor makes the early running.

Both Hamilton and Verstappen are still expected to be fighting it out towards the top, unless Sergio Perez makes a giant step up from last year, George Russell hits the ground running for the Silver Arrows or an outside team pounces on the new regulations to close the gap.

That decision failed to pay off, however, with the Red Devils sacking Moyes after just 10 months in charge.

After the current West Ham boss came Van Gaal, who arrived with big things expected due to his past success at the likes of Barcelona and Ajax.

Giggs was hoping to get the Red Devils job himself, which was why he stayed, but both ended up leaving nearly six years ago.

When Jose Mourinho took over, he opted to maintain his close relationship with Rui Faria – who had previously worked under him at clubs such as Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Fair departed in the summer of 2018, though, with Michael Carrick then given a place on Mourinho’s bench.

Carrick stayed to work under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian also regularly picking up the thoughts of Phelan and Kieran McKenna throughout his spell in the dugout.
