Sadio Mane's Luis Diaz admission shines light on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool transfer plan

Luis Diaz’s arrival at Liverpool has already had a positive impact on Jurgen Klopp’s squad, just 18 days after the transfer was made official. There is no doubt that Liverpool got a good deal for the Colombian international, but recent comments from Sadio Mane offer a deeper perspective on the benefits of his signing.

Diaz cost Liverpool an initial £37.5million, with another £12.5m potentially due to Porto in add-ons.

Considering the Portuguese club were initially said to be insisting that any buyer paid Diaz’s release clause of £66.8m (€80m), that is some discount.

The fact it came after Tottenham had made headway in negotiations with Porto made it even sweeter for Liverpool, who got their man and angered Spurs chairman Daniel Levy in one swoop.

Diaz’s quality is not in any doubt either. He had been on the Reds’ radar for some time and had contributed 16 goals and four assists in 26 appearances for Porto this season.

How would he react to the signing? Would he feel offended by the club bolstering his department? Would he seek reassurance of his place in the squad?

The answer arrived this week – and it was emphatic.

“Luis is a great player. When he came, I was not here, I was at AFCON and I watched two games of him,” Mane told CBS Sports in the build-up to the Inter Milan game.

“But before, he used to play for Porto and we always faced each other, so I know how good he is. He’s a great player. I’ve now spent two, three days with him and he’s a very, very nice guy.

“For sure he will do great for Liverpool because he’s so, so talented and he’s very humble. A very hard-working player.”

Liverpool have been very deliberate and focused in their work on the transfer market recently and Mane’s reaction to Diaz’s arrival shows a low-key but important knock-on effect of that approach.

The Senegalese forward has complete trust in the club. He knows the grand plan and can see the bigger picture.

The last two additions to Klopp’s squad – Diaz and Ibrahima Konate – have settled in well and strengthened the squad, without ruffling feathers. Liverpool is clearly a happy camp, as Mane outlined this week.

“I don’t take it as competition,” he said. “I take it as making each other better players, for sure. If you want to be a great team you need these kinds of players.

“We are really happy to have these kinds of players, and altogether fit. And for sure, we’re going to win and Liverpool will win from it.

“You think about the Champions League and Premier League…which is great for us as players and for the club, and for the fans.

“I think everyone knows Klopp is a great manager. He is used to this situation, making sure everyone is happy, and for sure he will keep doing the same.”

Liverpool face a crucial summer on the transfer market. The futures of Mane and Mohamed Salah will be the focus, with both players out of contract in June 2023.

But supporters can go into the off-season safe in the knowledge that, even if key players leave, the club will replace them in a considered manner, without damaging the team dynamic.

That is because there is more to Liverpool’s strategy than unearthing top players for good prices. Unlike some of their rivals, they are thinking about the full picture.

That decision failed to pay off, however, with the Red Devils sacking Moyes after just 10 months in charge.

After the current West Ham boss came Van Gaal, who arrived with big things expected due to his past success at the likes of Barcelona and Ajax.

Giggs was hoping to get the Red Devils job himself, which was why he stayed, but both ended up leaving nearly six years ago.

When Jose Mourinho took over, he opted to maintain his close relationship with Rui Faria – who had previously worked under him at clubs such as Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Fair departed in the summer of 2018, though, with Michael Carrick then given a place on Mourinho’s bench.

Carrick stayed to work under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian also regularly picking up the thoughts of Phelan and Kieran McKenna throughout his spell in the dugout.
