Storm Eunice: Will Premier League matches be cancelled on Saturday?

Published

Strong winds from Storm Eunice have caused power outages, rail disruption and general chaos in the UK this Friday, and the weekend’s Premier League schedule could also be at risk. With more complications potentially in the pipeline, Express Sport brings you the current state of play.

Millions have been urged to stay at home amid huge gusts of wind in excess of 100mph caused by Storm Eunice.

Hundreds of thousands of households are believed to be without power, while a number of people have been injured, and buildings destroyed.

The adverse weather conditions have caused carnage with rail and air travel, leading to the widespread cancellation of flights and trains.

While the red weather warning is set to end at 21:00 GMT on Friday evening, a yellow weather warning has been put in place for most of Saturday as winds continue to batter the south coast, south Wales and the west country.

The conditions could wreak havoc on Saturday’s Premier League offerings as a host of games are scheduled to take place in affected areas, with London and the south coast set for more severe weather tomorrow.

West Ham, Arsenal, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Southampton are all in action at home, and it remains to be seen whether the storm will make conditions unplayable. Liverpool, meanwhile, are also playing at home tomorrow while Tottenham travel to Manchester City. The Greater Manchester area and Liverpool has also been severely affected by the storm, meaning those games could also be in danger of getting called off.

In other divisions, Bournemouth’s clash with Nottingham Forest, and Leeds’ U23 meeting with Brighton have already been postponed due to the adverse conditions.

As yet, no Premier League games have met the same fate, although matters have been far from normal.

Newcastle opted against flying down to the London Stadium for this weekend’s clash with the Hammers and have instead put plans in place to travel by coach.

That much seems sensible in light of Manchester City’s white-knuckle flight home from Portugal on Wednesday, which saw the pilot abort landing and divert to Liverpool in windy conditions caused by Storm Dudley.

During his press conference on Friday, Sky Blues boss Pep Guardiola hailed the ‘magnificent’ pilot for keeping the players calm as the terrifying ordeal was caught on camera.

The Magpies may have had no choice but to travel by coach regardless, as Tottenham and Burnley both supposedly saw flights cancelled on Friday.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was also seen wobbling in the storm as fans, players and coaches are left to wonder whether matches will be playable.

With the extent of tomorrow’s conditions as yet unknown, Express Sport will keep you up to date with any short-notice postponements as they unfold.

That decision failed to pay off, however, with the Red Devils sacking Moyes after just 10 months in charge.

After the current West Ham boss came Van Gaal, who arrived with big things expected due to his past success at the likes of Barcelona and Ajax.

Giggs was hoping to get the Red Devils job himself, which was why he stayed, but both ended up leaving nearly six years ago.

When Jose Mourinho took over, he opted to maintain his close relationship with Rui Faria – who had previously worked under him at clubs such as Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Fair departed in the summer of 2018, though, with Michael Carrick then given a place on Mourinho’s bench.

Carrick stayed to work under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian also regularly picking up the thoughts of Phelan and Kieran McKenna throughout his spell in the dugout.
